YCT UNEVOC visits Songhai Centre, Porto Novo, Republic of Benin

The YCT UNEVOC center team visited Songhai Centre, Porto Novo in April 2014. The visit was an opportunity to see the tremendous development being carried out at the Songhai centre and to seek ways of collaboration between both centers.

The founder of Songhai center, Rev. Fr. Godfrey Nzamujo welcomed the UNEVOC team comprising of Ms Ify Marinze (Director), Dr (Mrs) Funmilayo Doherty (Coordinator), Mr. John Okewole (System Analyst) and the HOD Agric Technology department. The team took a tour round the centre. The Rev. Fr. took time to explain the new technologies in agriculture used by the Songhai centre and reiterated his willingness in collaborating with Yaba College of Technology, Lagos Nigeria. The modalities on the successful implementation of the partnership were discussed by both parties.

The Songhai Centre, Porto-Novo was created in 1985 by a Nigerian, Rev. Fr. Godfrey Nzamujo. According to him, the Centre is determined to improve food security on the African continent, model a pattern of sustainable production and empower youths both in skills acquisition and entrepreneurship. The success story of the Songhai Centre has transcended the French-speaking country and they have had several visits from personalities around the world. One of such is the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon who visited in 2010. The model of agriculture as well is now being replicated in several countries on the African continent. For example, Nigeria presently has over 10 replications of the Songhai Concept being implemented in various part of the country.

Some of the units/ departments visited in Songhai centre and processes observed include:

  • The various poultry houses
  • The Biogas technology unit
  • The Greenhouse farms
  • The Open farms
  • The Fish ponds
  • The process of waste recycling
  • The engineering (fabrication) workshop
  • The rice farm
  • The Processing Centers
  • The plastic production factory

The visit was concluded with several learning experiences and new opportunities for collaboration with Songhai centre in several capacities especially on skill developments.
